SUMMARY:SCORCHIN' SQUIRREL TRAIL RUN
DESCRIPTION:The Scorchin’ Squirrel is a trail race through Ferncliff Camp and Conference Center’s 1200 acres located just 10 miles west of Little Rock.  There are 4 distance options: a 10kish (1 loop)\, 11.5 mile (2 loops)\, 15.5 mile (3 loops) or 19.5 mile (4 loops). All distances are approximate.  Each loop passes through 1 full aid station and one water drop.   There will be refreshments at the end with a cook out at the pool.  Please bring stuff to share although Fleet Feet Little Rock and Ferncliff will provide burgers and hot dogs.  We will begin serving food at 10 AM.  No glass containers please.  No pets. \nThis is a great race for heat training and for trying out trail running with the shorter distances.  There is quite a bit of incline (heheh) throughout the course and a few water crossings in wet weather. \nAll the distances end back at the start of the race\, which is at the Ferncliff pool pavilion.  The pool will be open after the race.  It has a large covered pavilion and runners can cool off and enjoy some food and refreshments.  There are lots of changing stalls. \nAny proceeds from the event will support Ferncliff Camp and Conference Center.  If you’d like to reserve lodging the evening before the event call 501-821-3063 to reserve a room or cabin. \nIt takes about 25 volunteers to do this event right.  Would you like to volunteer and have a great time supporting runners?  If so please fill out this very brief volunteer application: https://forms.gle/s2kSoHaT8Ygvm58x8 \nClick Here to view the approximate route:  https://www.plotaroute.com/route/1404552 \nStrava course map for one loop completed:  https://www.strava.com/activities/5680121722?share_sig=6F664A841628868806&utm_medium=social&utm_source=ios_share \nAll distances begin: 7:00 am with a  6:50 am Mandatory Race Briefing

SUMMARY:Summer Milky Way/Perseid Meteor Shower Star Party
DESCRIPTION:Meteor showers get coverage in the popular press\, and astronomy groups invariably get requests from the public about how to view them. But there are challenges. First\, you need a dark\, open sky. That requires at least some travel for most people\, and then you need no moon. Finally\, you need to be prepared to stay up late or get up early\, as most showers don’t really get going until near midnight. But this year the Perseids are on an evening with a first-quarter moon\, which will provide engaging telescopic views before setting just as it gets dark enough to take in the Summer Milky Way\, at its best; together these provide a provocative prelude to the meteor shower. \nSo\, the Central Arkansas Astronomical Society has stepped up to the challenge this year\, hosting a public event at Lake Sylvia\, just 40 minutes out on Highway 10 from Little Rock. To be so close to urbanity\, LS has an amazingly dark sky open over the peninsula in the lake. It also has camping and a few cabins\, a plus for those willing to push observing into the AM hours. \nProgramming will begin in Ogden Hall at 7:30 and cover observing the Summer Milky Way\, as well as the meteor shower. Transitioning to the observing site will occur in time to catch telescopic views of the first-quarter moon\, while Venus will also decorate the celestial stage. As the moon drops\, there will be a constellation tour to welcome the Summer Milky Way onto center stage\, bringing a whole new suite of telescopic and binocular objects to view. \nThe event is worth attending just for the foregoing\, but around eleven\, meteor counts should start to rise as Perseus rises higher in the northeastern sky\, and telescope views will end. Portable chairs\, blankets\, sleeping bags\, and bug spray are recommended. As usual\, no white flashlights\, please. \nHow long have you wanted to experience a meteor shower? See you there.

SUMMARY:99 Miles of Bad Road
DESCRIPTION:99 Miles of Bad Road is a gravel bicycle race starting and ending in Hardy\, Arkansas.  Expect every road surface type\, with roughly 80% being unpaved.  Don’t let the elevation profile of the GPX fool you – Devices have picked up 100 feet or more of elevation gain per mile. These are relentless rolling hills with an occasional punchy climb or sketchy descent.  Everything from mud\, dirt\, gravel\, concrete bridges\, clay\, crushed limestone\, creek rocks\, broken pavement\, and more.  This route earns it’s name.  This is an ‘even year’ so we will be running the loops clockwise! Make sure you download the EVEN YEAR files. \nAll finishers will receive a cool memento! Top 3 in each category will receive a unique custom award. \nOh\, and we also have a 199 Mile route option… all 199’ers will be required to provide their own live GPS tracking – either via phone\, Garmin\, Spot\, etc. \nCheck the website and Facebook regularly for updates! \n————– \n-Both distances of this race are loop routes that start and end at Loberg Park in Hardy\, Arkansas.  Camping is available at the campground next door to the park.  We have nothing to do with that\, you’ll have to reserve with them here if you wish to camp: https://www.campspot.com/park/hardy-campground-rv-park \n-Unless there are tornadoes\, large hail\, or extreme thunderstorms the day of the race\, we will not cancel.  Put your big boy/girl pants on\, and ride! \n-There will be some water stops on the 99 mile route\, and this year we will have a fully stocked aid station at the Mammoth Spring State Park around half way. We will update the Ride With GPS route maps to reflect the locations closer to race day. The 199’ers can use these as well – however a large portion of their route will be ‘DIY’. Watch the website for the 199 Route file to be uploaded – that will give you guys an idea of where to find what so you can start planning your water and food needs ahead of time. \n-You are solely responsible for your own safety. We will however require a headlight\, flashlight\, or headlamp\, a whistle/horn\, at least 2L of water capacity\, and an emergency blanket/bivy\, and either a phone\, GPS\, or Bicycle computer. \n– Despite the risk of people tampering with arrows/flagging\, we WILL mark the 99 course this year\, well enough in advance to prevent timing issues. This does mean that some markers could be moved or taken down by people\, so you must make sure you have the right GPX file on your phone\, watch\, or computer. You are responsible for studying the route maps and navigating.  That’s half the fun!

And they will be beautiful. It will be equal parts VERT and equal parts fast flow\, we promise! \nThat said: A warning. This is a tough race! The trails are amazing but rocky. Bring your climbing legs and big girl pants because it will get hard. Most race days start cool and then heat up.  Not to scare anyone but this is probably not a good very first race. It will take you longer than a normal half marathon.  You are welcome to bail early just come back to the start and check out. No judgement and no worries! \nThe race is a fun run so is FREE unless you would like a shirt to commemorate the day! Our sweet soft 50/50 shirts from Rock City Outfitters return! Shirts are unisex fit. The link to order shirts is: Grit 26 shirt order  The shirts are $15 plus tax.  We will pick up the shirts the week of the race. \nAll of the proceeds from this race go to local Cross country teams along with a donation to the Friends of Nebo. \nWe will have an aid station every 4-6 miles and would love to have you volunteer\, run\, or enjoy the mountain with family. If you’re running and have family there we can put them to work!  Parking will be in the 2 parking lots at Sunset point and temporary parking across the road. DO NOT park at the visitor center.  Bathrooms are located at the campground/pool area when you first get up top! \nThe race starts from the Sunset point parking lot and after a quick look at the point and a short section of the 3C trail\, you’ll head down the Sunset connector and take a left onto Lizard tail. You’ll go roughly a mile on Lizard past the seasonal waterfall. Then up to the Rim trail where you’ll take a right and end up at Sunrise point for another beautiful view of the river valley. Then you’ll go down the Sunrise connector taking a right. You’ll make your way down to the Bench trail crossing and go right onto Miller’s Goat. You’re at the 5k point and will follow Miller’s 4 miles (including a water stop) to end up at the aid station. Proceed on Miller’s another mile past the Bench overlook to the Ox pull trail. Go down Ox 1.7 miles to the bottom and you’ll find another aid station to lift your spirits for the climb back up. Once you get back up turn right briefly on Miller’s to the Overlook and then stay on the Bench trail back a mile to the Aid station. If you’re doing 13 head up the Sunset connector to the finish. For the 20 you will head right down the Chickalah (pronounced like tequila!) loop trail for a mile and go left at the Y and do the loop clockwise. Then back up to the aid station one last time and up Sunset connector a long half mile to the finish. Piece of cake!
