Conquering the Bluffs: A Hike to Big Bluff and the Goat Trail

The Ponca Wilderness Area in Arkansas offers a treasure trove of hiking adventures, but for those seeking breathtaking views and a touch of challenge, the Centerpoint Trail to the Goat Trail is a must-do. This roughly 6-mile out-and-back trek takes you deep into the Ozark Mountains, rewarding you with panoramic vistas of the Buffalo River Valley. The entire hike has an elevation gain of just over 900 feet, mostly on the hike out.

We tackled the hike on a recent warm day. Our first time on the Goat Trail was part of a Thanksgiving Day weekend backpacking trip with a couple of the kids, this trip was just the two of us and we did it in under 4 hours.

The journey begins at the Centerpoint Trailhead, located a short drive north of Ponca. The initial leg follows a broad, well-maintained path, once an old wagon road. As you descend for about 2.5 miles, lush Ozark forest surrounds you, offering a cool escape on a hot day. Keep an eye out for diverse birdlife flitting through the trees and the occasional flash of a lizard on a sun-drenched rock.

On our descent, we encountered a couple from Florida. They were using this and other hikes, including one to Hawksbill Crag, as a welcome detour on their journey to visit family in Missouri. They inquired if we’d encountered “the snake” – a question that became a recurring theme as we passed other hikers traversing the trail. “Have you seen the snake?” seemed to be the preferred greeting on this particular day. While we never personally glimpsed the elusive reptile, we did see a video of the rattlesnake on the Instagram account of some folks from The Bike Inn Bentonville, whom we also coincidentally crossed paths with that day. It was determined by some of the other hikers that the snake was too busy keeping the local squirrel population in check to mess with us visitors.

The magic truly unfolds when you reach a junction on the trail. A right turn leads you to the most exciting part of the hike. But be warned, the Goat Trail is not for the faint of heart. This narrow path traverses the edge of a dramatic bluff, with a sheer drop of over 350 feet waiting below. This section requires a good sense of balance and a head for heights.

If you can conquer your nerves, the reward is unparalleled. The Goat Trail leads you out on Big Bluff, a magnificent natural overlook offering a breathtaking panorama of the Buffalo River snaking through the valley. The vastness of the Ozarks unfolds before you, a tapestry of rolling hills and dense forests. Take a moment to soak in the fresh air, the expansive views, and the feeling of accomplishment for reaching this hidden gem.

Remember, the return trip requires tackling the uphill climb on the Centerpoint Trail. While challenging, the stunning scenery and the knowledge that you’ve conquered the Goat Trail will fuel your ascent. This hike is best suited for experienced hikers with a good level of fitness. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes with good traction, bring plenty of water and snacks, and dress according to the weather.

For an unforgettable adventure in the heart of the Ozarks, the Centerpoint Trail to the Goat Trail offers a perfect blend of challenge and reward. So, lace up your boots, grab your backpack, and get ready to be awestruck by the beauty of the Ponca Wilderness Area. There is no cell phone service on the hike although we did get ATT bars at the trailhead.
