A New Outdoor Festival Takes Flight in Arkansas
Birders from across the region will soon have a new reason to visit Hot Springs. Registration is now open for the inaugural Birding Festival of the South, scheduled for October 8 through 10 in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
Presented by Oaklawn Hot Springs, the three-day event will celebrate the fall migration season with guided birding excursions, educational workshops, keynote speakers, live music, family-friendly activities, and opportunities to explore some of the most scenic natural areas in the Ouachita Mountains.
Festival organizers say the event is designed for everyone, from experienced birders to curious beginners looking to learn more about one of the fastest-growing outdoor recreation activities in the country.
Why Hot Springs Is a Prime Birding Destination
The timing of the festival coincides with the annual fall bird migration, when a wide variety of species pass through Arkansas on their journey south.
Organizers point to the incredible diversity of habitats surrounding Hot Springs as one of the reasons the city is an ideal host location. Within minutes of downtown, visitors can explore birding hotspots, including:
- Hot Springs National Park
- Northwoods Trails
- Ouachita National Forest
- Garvan Woodland Gardens
- Andrew Hulsey Fish Hatchery
- Lakes Hamilton, Catherine, Ouachita, and DeGray
These locations provide opportunities to spot migratory songbirds, waterfowl, raptors, and year-round resident species while also showcasing the region’s growing outdoor recreation scene.
Festival Passes and Activities
Weekend festival passes are currently available for $35 and include access to:
- Workshops and educational sessions
- Keynote speakers and panels
- Vendor hall access
- Kids activities and arts and crafts
- Live music
- Select meet-you-there field trips
Organizers say some guided excursions requiring transportation will have separate registration fees.
Those who register before August 8 will also receive commemorative festival items including a laminate pass, tote bag, metal tumbler, and a Birding Festival of the South field guide.
More Than Birding
In addition to field trips and educational programming, the festival will feature vendors, artists, outdoor recreation businesses, nonprofits, and conservation organizations.
The event reflects a growing interest in birding and nature-based tourism across Arkansas and the South. According to national participation surveys, bird watching continues to see major growth as more people seek accessible outdoor activities connected to conservation and wildlife appreciation.
Outdoor Recreation Continues to Grow in Arkansas
The Birding Festival of the South adds another event to Arkansas’s expanding outdoor recreation calendar. With its combination of public lands, mountain scenery, lakes, trails, and wildlife habitat, Hot Springs continues to position itself as a destination for outdoor enthusiasts year-round.
For visitors looking to combine hiking, paddling, mountain biking, and wildlife watching into one weekend, the October festival could become one of the more unique outdoor gatherings in the region.
