Arkansas has a new US Bicycle Route!

Adventure Cycling Association has announced the addition of a new route to the United States Bicycle Route System (USBRS): USBR 51 in Arkansas. This 88-mile route stretches from the Missouri state line to Alma, with plans to extend it to the Louisiana border.

The new route offers cyclists a diverse riding experience, combining urban and rural landscapes. Approximately 35 miles of the route coincide with the Razorback Greenway, providing access to amenities like restaurants and hotels. Cyclists can also enjoy stunning views of Lake Fort Smith and the surrounding Ozark Mountains.

As the route continues south of Fayetteville on State Highway 70, the setting turns rural as you move through the smaller, quaint communities of West Fork, Winslow, and Mountainburg. This phase of the USBR 51 terminates in Alma, Arkansas.

“We tried to identify routes attractive to all ages and abilities in selecting these highways, streets, and county roads. Safety, connected destinations, and fun is our objective,” said Kimberly Sanders, State Bicycle & Pedestrian Coordinator.

The U.S. Bicycle Route System is a growing national network of officially designated, numbered, and signed routes that utilize existing roads, trails, and other facilities suitable for bike travel. Once completed, it will cover 50,000 miles of routes, creating new possibilities for cross-country travel, regional touring, and bike commuting. Additionally, it will benefit communities by offering new bicycle routes, improving safety, and boosting tourism and economic activity.

Digital maps for all designated U.S. Bicycle Routes are available to the public for free on the Adventure Cycling Association website.

“It’s satisfying to see the USBRS network grow and know that we are playing a part in making long-distance bicycle travel more accessible to more people through these routes,” said Jenn Hamelman, Director of Routes for Adventure Cycling. “None of this would be possible without new and long-standing partnerships with state departments of transportation and local advocates.”
