Chug, Run, Repeat: The Beer Mile

The Community Bicyclist

The Beer Mile, a quirky endurance event combining running and drinking, has its roots in the late 1980s. While its exact origin is debated, it’s believed to have emerged from informal challenges among collegiate athletes in Canada. The initial rules were loosely defined, but the core concept remained consistent: consume a beer before each lap of a mile race. As the event gained popularity, more formal rules were established, including specific beer requirements and penalties for vomiting. Today, the Beer Mile has a global following, with dedicated organizations and official world records. Its appeal lies in its unique blend of athleticism and camaraderie, attracting both serious athletes and recreational enthusiasts.
