If you haven’t heard of COWabunga! Gravel yet, consider this your introduction to one of North Central Arkansas’s most charming grassroots cycling events. Hosted by Syllamo Events and set in the rolling hills around Viola, Arkansas, this race is the kind of thing that reminds you why you fell in love with gravel riding in the first place.
What Is It?
COWabunga! is a gravel race offering three distance options: 17 miles, 30 miles, and 50 miles, all starting from Viola City Park on Saturday, May 2nd. The 30 and 50 mile distances go off at 8 am, with the 17 mile sending riders out at 9 am. All distances begin with a neutralized start for safety before hitting the gravel.
The name says it all. Routes wind through cow farms, hay fields, woodland areas, and creek crossings, painting a picture of North Central Arkansas that most people never get to see. About 90% of each route is gravel, and the terrain runs the full spectrum: smooth stretches that let you open it up, followed by sections of legitimate GNAR that’ll keep your attention. The 17-mile course is a lollipop, while the 30 and 50 are full loops.

The Climbing Is Real
Don’t let the pastoral setting fool you. These routes average roughly 100 to 110 feet of elevation gain per mile, delivered in the short, punchy style that makes North Central Arkansas so notorious.
Your GPS will probably undercount it because the hills are small and numerous enough that many don’t register cleanly, but your legs will know. The organizers are upfront about this: come expecting a challenge, not a cruise.
That said, the event is genuinely beginner-friendly. The race website notes that a rider went from couch to completing the 17-miler, and while they wouldn’t recommend that approach for a fast time, it’s a testament to how welcoming the atmosphere is.
Swag, Food, and a Cowbell
This is where COWabunga! really shines. Registration includes professional photography, a locally catered post-race meal, a custom race shirt, and sponsored swag. Finishers receive an actual cowbell as their finisher award, because of course they do. Top three overall in each distance get podium recognition as well.
Aid stations are stocked with the full Syllamo Events spread: electrolytes, ginger ale, Coke, water, gels, sandwiches, fruit, pickles, chips, and candy. Medical staff will be on-site, and the local Sheriff’s department is providing support for a safe, neutralized start.

Why This Race Matters
COWabunga! isn’t backed by a big corporate sponsor or produced by a national event company. It’s put on by Jake and Rusty at Syllamo Events, a crew that also organizes trail runs and other cycling events across the region. Every dollar spent here circulates through Viola, neighboring towns like Mountain Home, Calico Rock, and Salem, and the local bike shop that makes all of it possible. Showing up to an event like this is a small act that has a real impact on the communities that share their roads with us.
Viola is a small town nestled between Mountain Home, Calico Rock, and Salem, all worth a visit if you make a weekend of it. Mountain Home has the most lodging options and is about 30 minutes out; Calico Rock and Salem are closer and offer a quieter, more historic feel.
