HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – April 3, 2024 – Ouachita National Forest officials have issued an alert for vehicles traveling Forest Service Road 114, located north of Lake Winona in Saline County, because of a culvert failure on a low water crossing.
A temporary crossing has been installed, but it is recommended that only four-wheel drive and high-clearance vehicles should pass through this section of the road. Standard passenger vehicles are not suitable for the current conditions. We contacted the Jessieville-Winona-Fourche Ranger District and they informed us that the repair work will not be completed before the April 8th eclipse. Visitors who plan to use this area for eclipse viewing should be aware of the road conditions.
There is a break that can be found northwest of Lake Winona, at a tributary to the Alum Fork of the Saline River. Caution signs have been put up at the intersections closest to the temporary crossing. Those who enjoy biking should take note that Forest Service Road 114 has parts of the Lake Winona Gravel Bike Loop.
“Visitors should always use caution while traveling and recreating on the forest and be prepared for the possibility of unpredictable road conditions,” said Jessieville-Winona-Fourche District Ranger Mike Welker. “We appreciate the public’s understanding as we work to make the needed repairs.”
