Construction of the first phase of the Bobcat Trail in Searcy County, Arkansas, is set to begin soon, marking a significant step forward for local outdoor recreation. The trail will span 7,810 linear feet or about 1.5 miles of non-motorized, multi-use path, situated on land owned by the Searcy County Economic Development Corporation, just north of the Searcy County “Buffalo River” Airport. This new addition will be the county’s first mountain bike trail, open to hikers and trail runners as well.

The Buffalo River Community Development Corporation is providing the matching funds from money raised with the Buffalo National River license plate for the Recreational Trails Program Grant, while Affordable Trail Solutions has been selected as the builder. A trailhead and gravel parking area will be developed off Airport Road, complete with an informational kiosk. The design also includes a secondary gate allowing direct access for cyclists arriving by air, making it one of the few locations in Arkansas where visitors can fly in, camp on-site, and immediately hit the trail.

The new trail, which features multiple jump elements and bypass routes for less advanced riders, is expected to be substantially complete within nine months of groundbreaking. Designed with the International Mountain Bicycling Association’s best practices, the trail will have a 24”-36” tread width and a 10’-12’ wide corridor, ensuring a sustainable build that prioritizes user experience, safety, and minimal environmental impact.

Darryl Treat, Executive Director of the Greater Searcy County Chamber of Commerce, announced that phase one of the Bobcat Trail is expected to be completed by summer 2025. He added, “We’re still finalizing the details for future phases.” While Searcy County currently lacks a National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) mountain biking team, Treat noted that the new trail could serve as a venue for cross-country running events for Marshall High School, broadening its potential for community and athletic use.
