Visionary Trail Builder to Lead Next Chapter in Arkansas Mountain Biking

NORTHWEST ARKANSAS — Few individuals have had a greater impact on Arkansas mountain biking than Gary Vernon. Now, the longtime trail advocate and builder takes on a new role as General Manager of OZ Trails Bike Park, a significant step forward in the state’s evolution as a world-class cycling destination.
The appointment, announced June 24, brings one of the most respected figures in Arkansas outdoor recreation leadership to the forefront of a project that promises to set new standards for mountain bike parks nationwide. For those who have worked closely with Vernon, including on projects like the Arkansas State Parks Monument Trails and trips across the country and into Canada’s famed Whistler trails, this move feels like a natural progression.
“Gary Vernon understands what makes great mountain biking experiences,” said J. Scott King, lead developer of OZ Trails Bike Park. “He’s built world-class trail systems and vibrant cycling communities. His track record speaks for itself. Gary helps create destinations that transform entire regions.”
Vernon currently serves as Director of Outdoor Recreation and Trail Innovation for Runway Group, where he’s helped shape over 600 miles of trails across Arkansas. A resident of Bella Vista, he’s been instrumental in transforming Northwest Arkansas from a quiet corner of the Ozarks into a global hub for riders.
His passion for the sport began humbly, assembling bikes at a Walmart in Missouri in 1984. That early experience sparked a lifelong dedication to cycling and eventually a 30-year career with Walmart, where he led environmental programs. In 2015, Vernon joined Tom Walton in realizing a bold vision for trails and outdoor infrastructure in Arkansas.
“Gary’s work over the past decade has been the foundation for what we have with OZ Trails today,” said Walton, CEO of Runway Group. “We wouldn’t be here without his leadership and the hundreds of people who share this vision. The bike park represents everything Gary has been building toward. I’m excited to see where he takes OZ Trails next, and I know we’re just getting started.”
In addition to his work with Runway Group, Vernon’s legacy includes eight years as president of Friends of Arkansas Singletrack (FAST), a grassroots trail organization that has been pivotal to the region’s cycling growth. He also played a key leadership role in developing the acclaimed Monument Trails within Arkansas State Parks—high-quality trail systems that combine sustainable design with interpretive and scenic value.

Vernon’s influence stretches far beyond Arkansas. In 2019, he received the American Trails Chairman’s Award for his groundbreaking work in trail design, and he’s presented at international summits, including the prestigious International Trails Summit in Zermatt, Switzerland.
In 2024, Vernon was appointed by Governor Sarah Sanders to the Arkansas State Parks, Recreation, and Travel Commission, a recognition of both his expertise and commitment to public service.
“Mountain biking has given me incredible experiences and connections throughout my life,” Vernon said. “At OZ Trails Bike Park, we’re creating a place where riders can challenge themselves and connect with others. I’m excited to work with our team to deliver experiences that exceed every rider’s expectations.”
Set to open in 2026, OZ Trails Bike Park aims to become a premier destination for riders of all levels. Vernon’s immediate appointment signals a clear direction: community-centered leadership with a deep understanding of mountain biking culture, inclusive trail development, and sustainable design.
For those of us lucky enough to have witnessed Gary’s dedication firsthand—whether while walking future trail corridors in an Arkansas state park or navigating singletrack in British Columbia—this moment feels like a continuation of a story that’s still being written. And like the best trails, it’s one we can’t wait to ride.
