Hobbs State Park Introduces Temporary Firewood Permit Program After Tornado Damage

ROGERS, Ark. – Following the severe tornado on May 26, 2024, that left a significant amount of downed timber, Arkansas State Parks has authorized a temporary firewood permitting program at Hobbs State Park – Conservation Area.

Officials said the initiative, set to begin this summer, is designed to help the park recover by reducing potential insect infestations, mitigating wildfire risks, improving the park’s appearance and accessibility, and supporting ecological restoration.

Interested individuals can purchase a firewood permit for $50 at the Hobbs State Park Visitor Center. Each permit is valid for two months and must be clearly displayed on the collector’s vehicle during wood gathering. Under park staff supervision and specific guidelines, permit holders can collect unlimited amounts of downed timber from designated zones.

“This program allows us to address storm damage in a controlled, environmentally responsible way while offering the public an opportunity to assist in cleanup efforts,” said Mark Clippinger, park superintendent.

The program outlines specific collection zones, boundaries, and safety protocols. A key rule is that only dead trees felled by the storm can be removed; cutting or removing live trees or healthy plants is prohibited. The park will map, mark, and manage collection areas to ensure sustainable access.

Further guidelines include:

  • Daily collection will be limited to designated zones clearly marked with physical signage.
  • Permit holders must use protective equipment and are allowed to use tools such as chainsaws, ATVs, and pull-carts.
  • Firewood collection is permitted within 100 feet of roadways, though restrictions will apply near trails.
  • Vehicles must stay on established roadways unless park staff grant specific approval otherwise.

This permit program is scheduled to run through Dec. 31, 2025. After this date, park officials will assess whether an extension into 2026 is necessary. All collection activities will be monitored by park management to uphold safety standards, protect the environment, and ensure compliance with the permit conditions.
