Outback in the Ozarks Returns: A Six-Year Hiatus Ends with the 2025 Race

Northwoods Trails

The iconic Outback in the Ozarks relay race is returning after a six-year break, reigniting the spirit of adventure and endurance in Arkansas’ beautiful Ozark Mountains. The race, set for October 10-11, 2025, invites runners from across the region to take part in the only overnight team relay in the state.

This year’s event marks the long-awaited return of a 205-mile challenge that spans 36 relay legs, starting in the charming town of Eureka Springs and finishing at Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park. Along the way, participants will experience some of the most scenic and challenging terrain in Northwest Arkansas, with a course that weaves through five state parks:  Withrow Springs, Hobbs State Park, Lake Fort Smith, Devil’s Den, and Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park.

Whether you’re a seasoned marathoner or a newcomer to team relays, Outback in the Ozarks offers an unforgettable experience. The race features teams of 4-12 runners, with each runner tackling a portion of the course that varies in length and difficulty. Teams will run day and night, with the camaraderie and team spirit fueling them through the toughest legs.

For those who may prefer a shorter challenge, the 65-mile Day Relay option allows runners to join the race Saturday morning at Lake Fort Smith. The day relay teams will join the full-course teams as they race toward the finish line at Prairie Grove, making it the perfect opportunity for runners to take part in the event without committing to the full overnight journey.

The Outback in the Ozarks was founded in 2013 by Todd and Kimberlee Guin, whose passion for adventure and the natural beauty of the Ozarks laid the foundation for what would become a cherished race. Over the years, the event became known for more than just the run itself. The race is a celebration of teamwork, community, and the outdoors, with participants decorating their vans, camping in state parks, and forming lifelong bonds. It wasn’t just about crossing the finish line—it was about the memories made along the way.

However, after the 2019 race, the event took a break. Now, inspired by Todd and Kimberlee’s original vision, a new team of race directors is bringing the event back, hoping to rekindle the sense of camaraderie and adventure that made it so popular in the first place.

“Outback in the Ozarks is not just a race,” said a previous participant. “It’s about pushing yourself, supporting your teammates, and experiencing the incredible beauty of the Ozarks in a way that few others will ever see.”

Whether you’re taking part in the full 205-mile overnight challenge or the shorter 65-mile day relay, the Outback in the Ozarks promises an unforgettable adventure that highlights the very best of Arkansas’ rugged wilderness.
