The Arkansas Climbers Coalition is working on an ambitious plan to transform Big Rock Quarry in North Little Rock into a rock climbing paradise, right in the heart of central Arkansas. If their vision comes to life, adventure enthusiasts could soon enjoy world-class climbing without leaving the city.

The Arkansas Climbers Coalition (ARCC) is excited to announce the launch of its next major project at Big Rock Quarry in North Little Rock, Arkansas. After months of collaboration with the City of North Little Rock Parks Commission, the ARCC has received approval to move forward with developing climbing routes at the quarry.

Borgeson said the project will be self-funded by the Arkansas Climbers Coalition through donations. The ARCC plans to apply for future grants but is currently taking donations for the project through its website (Make Donations Here). The ARCC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization making donations tax deductible.

Sharon Bennett, an Ambassador to the ARCC and the state director for the American Scholastic Climbing League, has been the point person for the organization on this project since its inception in February 2023. Bennett mentioned that they expect the quarry to be a popular sport climbing area with access to bolted routes 90-100 feet in height.

“We’re excited to help turn this area into a hub for outdoor recreation,” said Bennett. “This project will provide local climbers with an urban climbing venue that’s truly one of a kind. Visitors can enjoy not only the climbing but also the nearby pump track, skate park, and mountain bike and hiking trails.”

Nestled along the scenic Arkansas River Trail in North Little Rock, this area is perfectly positioned for adventure. The trail also links to two other beloved climbing hotspots: Pinnacle Mountain State Park and Rattlesnake Ridge Natural Area—making central Arkansas a dream destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

The Coalition maintains route development standards and guidelines that will direct the project through both phases.

A Via Ferrata was originally planned but is not in the current scope of the project.

Phase One of the project is officially underway, marking a significant step toward transforming the area into a premier climbing destination. The project will be completed in two phases, with approximately 70 climbing routes planned for each phase. The ARCC invites the community to join in and support this exciting development as it progresses.

Back in 2016, Loco Ropes, a ropes course management company, proposed building a facility in the park featuring zip lines and other elements. However, the project ultimately fell through when Loco Ropes decided not to pursue the plan after the city board decided it would need to go through a bidding process.

Here’s a video we recently captured showcasing the quarry area:
