Fayetteville 5K to Support Families Living with Autism

A Northwest Arkansas nonprofit is inviting runners, walkers, and families to hit the trails this summer for a cause that goes beyond the finish line.

Fayetteville-based Mitchell’s Mountain will host its “Dash for Hope” 5K and 1K on June 27 at Kessler Mountain, bringing the community together to support individuals with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Founded by Greg Curoso, Mitchell’s Mountain focuses on serving older children and adults with autism, as well as their families. The organization’s long-term vision is to create a supportive community that includes residential care options for individuals with severe autism as they transition into adulthood.

Curoso’s personal connection to the mission runs deep. His son, Mitchell, was diagnosed with autism in 2014 and inspired the creation of the nonprofit.

A Race Designed for Inclusion

The event features two distances designed to bring participants of all abilities together. A 1K “Dash for Hope” will begin at 7:30 a.m., followed by the 5K after the final 1K participant crosses the finish line.

The structure is intentional.

The 1K gives individuals with autism and their families a safe, welcoming environment to participate together. It also allows 5K participants to line the course and cheer them on, reinforcing a sense of dignity, inclusion, and shared purpose.

“This race is about giving parents hope that their child’s needs will be taken care of as they get older,” Curoso said. “It’s a hope that people like Mitchell deserve.”

Why Movement Matters

Beyond fundraising, the event highlights the importance of physical activity for individuals with autism.

Regular movement can improve mood, reduce stress, and support overall health. For many individuals with higher support needs, however, opportunities for safe and accessible exercise can be limited.

Curoso noted that some individuals with autism face additional challenges, including limited mobility without assistance, medication-related weight gain, and restrictive diets. Events like the Dash for Hope aim to create opportunities for movement while building community support around those challenges.

A Personal Challenge for a Larger Purpose

In addition to organizing the race, Curoso has taken on a yearlong running challenge to raise awareness for autism and the mission of Mitchell’s Mountain. He has already completed more than 250 consecutive days of running as part of his goal to run every day for a full year.

“It’s doing something that comes with a level of difficulty to show solidarity,” he said.
