I’ll Take Mine, On the Rocks

Race the Base

Running has been a focal point for me this week.If you haven’t noticed the new page on Arkansas Outside, check out the Race the Base tab. Arkansas Outside is one of many great sponsors for this inaugural trail run at Pinnacle Mountain State Park benefiting Partners for Pinnacle. If you want to know what Partners for Pinnacle does, one example is easily found on the Jackfork Mountain Bike trail at the park. PFP provided some funding to help with a few of the wooden bridges. I’m also trying my hand at being a race director. Please, judge gently and feel free to offer me advice when we see each other at races about things you’d like to see happen at this race. No promises, just a guarantee that I’ll listen.

The Course. It’s not as easy as it looks.

Thursday morning I needed to nail down the race course and scout locations for the start and the finish line party so I wandered around the park for a half  hour or so with the always helpful park superintendent, laying out ideas for how we’re going to get folks into the park and onto the singletrack with a minimum of disruption to the normal park activities and the least amount of traffic distractions. I think we have a winner! After deciding on what we think will be the final course, I ran it with my runkeeper to measure the distance .Be watching here as we post more information  about our sponsors and items for giveaways as we secure them.

Back to the running agenda: for weeks I have been meaning to join in Go! Running’s Thursday night group run.I’ve been encouraged by AO contributing writer and runner Jen Freilino to try it out. So I chose this past Thursday, when the car temperature gauge read 103 and I’d already had a good 3 miles of trail running in, to check it out. By divine providence I ran (pun intended) into Greg, the designer of our T-shirt logo for Race the Base. He was taking a poll on color schemes. My day of meeting  fitness goals and race organizing was tying together nicely and it was all due to running.

We’ll be showing off our Tshirt logo as soon it is approved and available. Don’t forget to grab your spot in the race, register today and we’ll see you on the rocks.
